Dalyan is a village in the District of Ortaca, Muğla Province, Turkey. There are many places called Dalyan in Turkey. The word Dalyan is Greek and it is called natural areas with special fish catching mechanisms. They are usually in the natural structure of reeds by the sea.

Dalyan, which connects Köyceğiz Lake to the Mediterranean, and Dalyan, which used to be a town and now a neighborhood, takes its name from the fish catching area in the region. In addition, it is one of the important reed regions of Turkey and the whole delta is in the special environmental protection area. It is one of the important haunts of migratory birds.

Settlement
Located at the intersection of Turkey's South Aegean and Western Mediterranean regions, Dalyan is located on the shores of the main canal connecting Köyceğiz Lake and the Mediterranean. İztuzu Beach, where the Dalyan Canal reaches the sea, is a 5 km long beach where Caretta Caretta sea turtles lay their eggs and is a natural part of the delta. The water resources that feed the delta consist mainly of natural resources around Köyceğiz and thousands of bees of the Dalaman Stream, which has been a dam for a long time. The ancient city of Kaunos, which is the capital of the Kingdom of Kaunos at the same time as the Lycian Civilization dating back 2500-3000 years, is also on the borders of Dalyan and Çandır Villages. The ruins are in a very good condition and are one of the places that travelers visit in Dalyan.

Tourism, Population and Emerging Problems
Tourism in Dalyan started in the mid-1980s as a favorite place for especially caravan and camping holidaymakers, environmentalists and bird watchers, and in the 90s, the number of tourists and places serving increased. Initially, it was possible to meet travelers from almost all countries of Europe, but in the 90s the weight shifted to German and Dutch tourists. In the 2010s, it began to become almost exclusively a place for British holidaymakers. Foreigners, mainly British, have taken the lead in Dalyan by taking many places in Dalyan and have led the way for the start of villa tourism.
< / >Dalyan, the population of 5 564 (in 2022) is growing with new migrations increasing every year. Buildinging is concentrated around and behind the river. Since the construction of villas and pools has been intensively carried out in the town since 2010, the whole region has started to lose its natural feature in terms of both flora and fauna every year. The traveler's texture of Dalyan, where nature and history lovers were dominant in the past, has started to leave its place to holidaymakers who are not interested in nature and history after high construction. In the past, while special sensitivity was shown to endangered sea and lake turtles and creatures such as Blue Crab, today they have become an object of tourism. Caretta Caretta turtles are tried to be shown to holidaymakers by giving chicken meat that is not in the food chain. Blue Crabs under protection are presented as the famous food of the town and are unconsciously presented and consumed in restaurants.

Economic Activities
Before tourism, Dalyan's most important sources of income were fishing, cotton agriculture, citrus fruits. In the 2000s, cotton production was replaced mainly by pomegranate activities. Agriculture is carried out alone with tourism, while fishing is carried out by a cooperative whose establishment goes back as far as Dalyan itself. Chupra and sea bass are the most consumed fish varieties in the region, especially mullet.
